Ethiopia creates greenhouse to help dryland farmers grow food and collect water

Roots Up has developed a dedicated Dew Collector that can help farmers in arid climates increase their crops even during drought. The project was aimed at creating independent agricultural points in Ethiopia, but in general the greenhouse can be used everywhere. It helps collect dew that could just evaporate into the atmosphere. With this product, farmers can collect clean water for irrigation and drinking.

The domed greenhouse activates when the temperature rises in the midday sun, causing the water to evaporate. Like many other greenhouses, the pyramid-shaped dew collector locks out heat and humidity inside during the day, providing the perfect environment for plants to grow inside. As an added bonus, especially in dry climates, the greenhouse captures water that evaporates due to heat during the day and lower temperatures at night. Water vapor collects at the top of the structure. The upper level is open at night to allow condensate to flow into the water collection tank.

The collected water can be used both for plants and for drinking.
